Housing For All

Florida has been in a housing crisis for years and Tallahassee has responded by taking away every tool we have to fix it. Whether you rent or own, you deserve to know that you can afford your home. We need to slap the state’s hand off of things like rent control and short term rental regulations, and start tackling this like it’s an emergency.

What we need to do:

  1. Bring Back Home Rule: Repeal the state bans that keep our own city from capping rent hikes or reining in Airbnb.
  2. Real Renter Protections: Guarantee a free lawyer in eviction court, ban voucher discrimination, and end junk fees and deposit games.
  3. Protect the Housing Trust Fund: Lock in full funding for Florida's affordable housing trust fund for good.

How we do it:

  1. Bring Back Home Rule: Repeal F.S. 166.043/125.0103 (the 1977 rent control ban, tightened by the 2023 Live Local Act) and F.S. 509.032(7) (the 2011 short-term rental preemption).
  2. Real Renter Protections: Fund a Right to Counsel pilot for eviction defense, pass a statewide source-of-income anti-discrimination law, and cap deposits and fees with interest-bearing escrow.
  3. Protect the Housing Trust Fund: Statutorily mandate full appropriation of the Sadowski Trust Fund (SHIP/SAIL), ending two decades of the Legislature sweeping it for other uses.
